The city of Richmond is the county seat of Fort Bend County and is located on the Brazos River, approximately 15 miles southwest of Houston. In 1822, 12 men camped in the vicinity and were soon followed by Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred. A log fort built in the area became the nucleus of the Fort Bend settlement. Named after Richmond, Virginia, the town was first incorporated in 1837, and progressively grew in population during the 20th century, reaching its current population of over 12,500 people.
