The city of Richmond is the heart of Texas history. The origin of the city dates back to 1822 when some of Stephen F. Austin’s colonists discovered the bend in the Brazos River that would eventually become the location of Fort Bend, a protection and storage settlement. The area boasts rich soil, which motivated settlers to seek over 41 land grants from the Mexican government. It quickly became one of Austin’s most populous colonies. In 1837, Robert Eden Handy and William Lusk purchased a parcel of land that they named after Richmond, Virginia. They then divided the land into lots to sell, and the town of Richmond was incorporated by the Republic of Texas government in May 1837.

As the oldest city in Fort Bend County, Richmond is home to many historic sites, including Morton Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the state and the resting place of famous Texans, including Jane Long (“The Mother of Texas”), Mirabeau B. Lamar (“The Father of Education”) and Walter M. Burton. There are also many historic homes, including the 1883 John M. and Lottie D. Moore Home and the 1882 McFarlane House. Much of the city’s historic architecture has been preserved in a lovely historic district.

In addition to a tour of the John Moore Home, visitors to historic Morton Street can enjoy diverse dining, including ethnic, gourmet and contemporary restaurants. There are also beautiful, restored plantation homes that are framed by 200-year-old oak, pecan and magnolia trees. Surrounded by many of the county’s 35 master-planned communities, Richmond is often the center of government activities, as well as the occasional film or commercial.

Richmond’s residents partake in diverse community events year-round. The Fort Bend County Fair parade is in September, while October brings the popular annual Pecan Festival. Springtime sees the arrival of the Art Walk on Morton Street, and Christmas brings Miracle on Morton Street, a holiday festival.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy many of the county’s parks, including Brazos Bend State Park, a 5,000-acre park providing nature trails, camp sites, pavilions, picnic areas and the George Observatory. There are also county and city parks, which offer a variety of diversions, from volleyball to fishing piers. In the county’s master-planned areas alone, there are over 600 acres of parks, 320 acres of lakes and 12 golf courses.

Finally, those looking for a big-city adventure or a day at the beach can visit Houston or the Gulf Coast, both of which are a short drive from Richmond.
